Torrance Unified School District investigates after racist videos circulate at high school

Racist video circulates at Torrance high school, with Black student targeted by ‘racially hateful message’

Torrance Unified School District officials are investigating after racist videos have circulated at a high school classroom.

A group of students who identified as Hispanic gathered in a meeting at Torrance High School on April 26. They decided to post a video about their experiences as a young Hispanic in America.

The students said they wanted to create a positive video about the lives of Hispanic students, however one of the students decided to post a video depicting the horrors of Hispanics in America.

The racist message that circulated on social media has been removed.

“I was not personally offended by the video. It’s my opinion that these videos should not be shared.” said Torrance Unified School Board President Greg Anderson. “However, we want it to be clear that the district will not tolerate racially based social media or other behavior that incites fear, hatred or violence.”

The students said it was an eye-opening experience as they had never experienced racial slurs or derogatory comments before they posted the videos on their Instagram account. The students say they wanted to teach the students and their friends a lesson about how they live now and what happens to them when they talk about what their lives are like in America today.

It was the second time that the racist videos have circulated at a high school campus as they circulated at a middle school campus earlier this year.

The videos were taken down and Anderson said that the district has asked teachers to remain on the same page in relation to the videos circulating at Torrance High School.
