Serena Williams’ legendary tennis career – the first and only American to win all four Grand Slams – could be over after a third-round singles’ round-of-16 loss at the US Open.
Williams, who was playing on her 36th birthday, lost 6-1, 6-2 to qualifier Caroline Wozniacki in a two-set, five-hour battle on Thursday afternoon. She will not play in the quarterfinals on Friday.
It is the latest in a series of devastating losses for Williams, who is making her way toward her first Slam final in five years at the tournament, having lost three finals and failing to win a Grand Slam title since 2011.
Wozniacki is playing her first big tournament since losing to Simona Halep at the French Open last month.
“It’s disappointing. I put in the work,” Williams said after she was asked to rate her career. “I just didn’t perform. I just didn’t execute the things that I executed. I just didn’t get it together.”
Williams made two back-to-back-to-back unforced errors in her opening game, getting her set back at 5-1. But she battled back to save two match points, then broke again to tie game No. 3, before Wozniacki took the momentum back with a stunning 6-3, 6-0 win on a break point.
Williams was broken late in the set but found a way to stay alive until the final point of the match to keep her record on the tour intact.
