The City of Los Angeles announced awards Monday for three climate projects in L.A. County that will encourage residents to make the world a better place and reduce the amount of energy used to heat and cool buildings.

The city said in a news release that the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works was awarded the state’s Climate Incentive program for the project at its Art-in-action center, which will be completed by 2020. The city said the city was also awarded $50,000, part of a $500,000 state grant, for its other project, called the Sanctuary for Arts and Culture, with its own arts and culture park, which will be completed by 2020.

The county has been awarded $500,000 from the state.

The city’s project was chosen for its vision to build a permanent, publicly accessible art center and park, and to help support a diverse arts program, said Deputy City Administrator Robert Lopez.

Lopez said the project will help the city reach a greater proportion of residents older than 55 who are not receiving health benefits or who face barriers to accessing community resources like social services, recreation and arts activities.

“We want to continue to serve as a city that values the contributions that all members make, and we want to help them be able to participate fully as contributors to the health and well-being of the community in perpetuity,” he said.

“We want to create a space that can serve as a physical catalyst for a community that welcomes all,” Lopez said of the park project.

The project will provide cultural and community programs designed to strengthen the community, including programming focused on art and the arts, technology, science and community health, Lopez said.

The city is also working on another project that’s being funded with a $50,000 grant.
