Judy Shelton, Appointee of Bill Clinton, Sets to Start New Career As a Federal Judge

Court Appears Ready to End Trump’s Special Master Review Process

Judy Shelton, who for 14 years served as an assistant district attorney with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, is set to begin a new career as a federal judge. She will take over the post of chief judge for the Eastern District of California after serving as chief judge of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Central District of California in San Jose from 2008 to 2009. Shelton has worked with the United States Trustee’s Office, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and the U.S. Supreme Court.

Judy Shelton, an appointee of Bill Clinton, will take over the post of chief judge for the Eastern District of California after serving as chief judge for the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Central District of California in San Jose from 2008 to 2009. Shelton has worked with the United States Trustee’s Office, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and the U.S. Supreme Court. Shelton was a first-year law student at Stanford University in 1973 when she was asked by her father to serve as his legal secretary. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Stanford University, a Juris Doctor degree from Stanford Law School, and a Master of Laws degree in public administration from Georgetown University Law Center. While in law school she won a scholarship to study abroad in Paris, France, for a semester. While in Paris she interned at the U.S. Department of Labor in their Washington, D.C., office, and in her second year at law school she was an intern for Judge Stanley F. Birch, who presided at trial and sentenced defendant Gary Webb to five years in prison for the 1971 Church Committee Report exposing the U.S. government’s role in the Central American death squad.
